Jamstik Studio MIDI Guitar

1 review

The Studio MIDI guitar was built for producers, guitarists, and songwriters alike. A formidable travel-size guitar with two humbuckers featuring a coil tap switch, three-way switch and standard 1/4'' out; the true groundbreaking features come on the MIDI side. A precision mounted Hex Pickup sends signal to our onboard processors which perform algorithmic pitch analysis & MIDI conversion in near realtime. Speed and accuracy being our foremost goals - you'd forget it's not analog if not for the impossible sounds you'll play.

An absolute game-changer!!

I love synthesizers. The problem is, synthesizers don't love me. Or at least keyboards don't. I have played guitar for most of my life, but I can’t play keys. I know where the keys are…but actually playing them? Nah. Enter the Jamstik Studio MIDI Guitar. It lets me play the synthesizers I love, with an instrument I’m actually proficient with. I can play soft synths through my DAW using USB. I can play hardware synths using standard 5-pin midi. I can even play iOS synths using Bluetooth (!!!) The versatility of this instrument is unlike anything out there. Oh, and it's an actual guitar. With REAL pickups & everything :o The setup was great right out of the box. The fretwork, neck and body are all excellent. It's super comfy to play, and there are lots of clever design features that I wasn’t expecting. Like the tuning wrench that snaps into the bridge - how frickin cool is that? I really can't overemphasize how nice this guitar is. It came in a nice gig bag with all of the cables & accessories needed. I was worried that I might need to buy my own 5-pin midi adapter, but even that was included. As far as MIDI implementation goes, it exceeds all expectations. I’ve tried other guitar-to-MIDI options in the past, but this is leagues better than anything else I’ve tried. The midi tracking is exceptional. You get all of the nuance of your playing style, but with the sound of…well, anything. You can even use this guitar to play drums (!!!) The Creator software that comes with the guitar is solid. There were a few hiccups when initially installed (MacOS), but otherwise it works as expected. It’s nice to have a standalone app for practicing & just general experimentation, but it also works pretty well as a plugin. It does seem heavy on resources in Logic, so if you plan on writing a multitrack song using JUST the Creator sounds, you’ll need to bounce some tracks to audio in order to save on CPU. There’s so much more praise I could give this guitar. I could write all day about how awesome it is, but I’d rather get back to playing it instead. Great job on a killer product, Jamstik!

Playing strings and orchestral sounds with a MIDI guitar is one of the best use-cases for composers who might not be as well versed on a piano as they are on the guitar. Plus, playing string patches WITH strings just feels all the more natural and intuitive as well.

FAQ

Is the new Studio MIDI Guitar available left-handed?

We're gauging interest in mass production of a lefty model, so please join our waitlist if you have a have intent of purchasing and we'll let you know first when they are available.

Is it working on pitch recognition or contact sensors?

We are using a special MIDI pickup for pitch recognition paired with our own unique onboard algorithmic processing to ensure this job is done as quickly and accurately as possible—all while retaining genuine guitar playability.

How long does pitch conversion take? Can you share latency numbers?

The time it takes the pitch conversion to process the information into MIDI data over USB or TRS averages to 10ms. The typical range is from 6ms-15ms. The final amount of latency will vary depending on the hardware specifications and task management of the paired device. Other measures can be taken to adjust latency by using the buffer rate settings of your DAW.

Are there onboard sounds?

No, there are no onboard sounds or effects built-in to the guitar. Just like a lot of MIDI keyboards, you'll have to connect your Jamstik to a device (smartphone, tablet, laptop/desktop computer) running either our software or third-party software to generate the sound. There is also a standard 1/4" guitar output, so you can utilizes amps, pedals, and interfaces as usual.

Can it be used for tabbing with software like Guitar Pro?

The Studio MIDI Guitar is compatible with any apps and DAWs that accept MIDI-input. It works great for scoring in Guitar Pro by entering notes step by step, however, you will need to add things like hammer-on, slides, bends & other articulations manually after the note information has been entered since the software does not currently support real-time MIDI implementation.

Will it be able to transpose MIDI to different octaves or tunings?

In general, whatever physical tuning the guitar is at will dictate the MIDI pitch, so you can set any tuning you like. However, at very low tunings there may be some performance degradation. With 24 frets available, there shouldn't be a great need to octave up or down, but you can always play in standard tuning and transpose the MIDI data in your DAW.

Will the software require a DAW?

While the Studio MIDI guitar will work right out of the box with all MIDI-capable DAWs and plugins, the guitar does not require a DAW. The compatible Jamstik VST/AU Plugin can run as a standalone app on Mac and Windows and includes a curated library of specifically designed sounds for the Studio guitar.

Does it utilize MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression?

Yep, it's sending pitch bend/CC messages on multiple channels.

Do you have to use special strings?

Any metal strings will work just fine—The MIDI pickup is magnetic, so the guitar requires you to use metal strings rather than nylon. We'd recommend following standard .010–.046 gauges, but slightly below or above this range should be fine, though may require some sensitivity adjustments.

Can I use a Bluetooth speaker or wireless headphones?

No, you'll want to use a wired connection (aux cord) instead of a Bluetooth speaker or wireless headphones to avoid unwanted latency.

Are there any Duties, Taxes, or VAT included in the pricing?

No, every country, state, province, and city has different rules—making it impossible to calculate and pay accurately. All Duties, VAT, or any taxes are the responsibility of the customer.
