Jamstik review

This thing is awesome! I’m not too crazy about the build quality compared to my other guitars but I’m not surprised because I didn’t expect it to replace my other guitars. It’s definitely a great product and revolutionary for me in terms of recording MIDI in the studio so I do recommend it for guitar playing producers. I wouldn’t use it to track actual guitar audio, but I love it for just MIDI. It also hasn’t gotten out of tune since I got it like a month ago which is pretty cool!

Great guitar with awesome features

I absolutely love this guitar just for playing hooked to a good ol tube amp or even a portable with some modeling features. The addition of MIDI really expands what you can do with this instrument; playing piano pieces that sound as good as a real piano for example. Then you have the bluetooth allowing you to play (midi only) completely wirelessly to your windows DAW or even a tablet or phone with a DAW app surprisingly without any lag whatsoever. Most importantly, this guitar is as fun to play as my Fender Strat and then more.

Very pleased, it's a real all in 1 electric guitar

Very good quality & design, great sounds. I only hoped that I could change each string volume individually in the software (for now we can only decrease the sensitivity in the software but not the volume) But I'm sure that great improvements will come !

Fantastic Creativity Tool!

While I’m getting better at keyboards, at heart I’m a guitar player, and there are times when I just want to express myself with keyboard sounds in a way that is only possible with how I play guitar. Enter this cool, little device. I’ve had a blast triggering everything from my Roland and Korgs to my beloved Mellotron! I’ve also found it to be a high-quality, very playable travel guitar that I use for writing/practice while on the road. My only wish for future revisions are a trem system, and a tone control for the traditional humbuckers. Customer care has been outstanding throughout.

Where has this been my whole life?!

I am absolutely in love with my Jamstik!! This is what I have been looking for for the longest time. I knew there were options for midi guitar interfaces, but this has surpassed my expectations. Thank you!!!

Thumbs up

I’m a long time guitarist and I’ve always wanted to be able to transcribe what I’m playing on guitar into MIDI but it would take way too long to use a keyboard controller. jamstick has given me the opportunity to quickly get my guitar technique into midi data

A totally delightful and versatile axe.

The Jamstik is, pound for pound, the most flexible, portable, inspiring, solidly constructed, well-designed hardware-software instrument I've ever played. I spent over 15 years trying to turn the guitar and pedalboard into something that could open up like a tone cornucopia and now I have to take all of that and set it to one side to make room for all of the new possibilities this much more "have guitar will travel" package opens up. Where was this thing when I was touring Australia with 100 pounds of equipment? I love that I can just sling this thing and my iPad over my shoulder and walk around with what would have taken up a ROOM in 1980.

So far, so good

The setup from the factory wasn't so great. The midi pickup was too far from the strings for good tracking and the action was very high. It took about 45 minutes to correct everything after which I was really quite impressed. The included soft synth needs work, I don't use it.

Good but still not 100%

It’s fun, but it doesn’t track my movements all of the time… quieter plucks don’t register and I’m having to ‘go easy’ on my riffs because many of them don’t translate well to midi. Feels like more of a learning curve than I expected for being able to smoothly articulate most kinds of synth patches and non-guitar sounds.

Studio guitar has taken over as my main guitar! Swiss army knife of guitars!

What I was hoping for when purchasing was a solid midi controller so i could have more space on my desk by eliminating a usb midi keyboard. WHat I got instead was an awesome guitar that can track midi. love it enough that I sold my 1980's Fernandes Telecaster that I have been using in bands on tour in the studio etc, basically my identity, my main axe....since the late 90's. The smaller form factor and gig bag allows me to leave it out in the studio on a stand (i have some clumsy cats) and always had to put my guitar in a case after use. The single coil / humbucker switch allows me to get the sound I would out of two guitars without unplugging. On to the midi: The usb-c cable can go directly into an ipad pro, use a powered usb-c hub and connect more sequencing like the op-z, app routing options with AUM or Audiobus apps as well as daws like cubasis and auria pro are just the beginning. I have used bluetooth midi from the op-z while using trs or usb-c midi with the guitar. I have used an iconnectmidi4+ with an ipad to allow the guitar to control more synths like the behringer k-2, while controlling synth apps on the ipad (plan on using the afx station next). The main thing in this rambling review is that there are 3 options for bluetooth and 6 pickup options for guitar that connect and track wonderfully. I have not even TOUCHED on mpe or expression that adds a whole new level to midi! *some ipad apps react differently but with midi learn you can set the parameters. In conclusion this guitar rocks and works out of the box, with some settings adjusted and tweaks here and there you will be very happy. I did an unboxing video and plan to do a follow soon https://youtu.be/Em2L6V1ZFhs feel free to ask me questions.

Finally found what I’ve been looking for

Ever since I started making music I’ve wanted to have a synth for my guitar because I am so much more comfortable on a guitar than piano. I have used software plugins, and synth pedals into amps that plug into my computer, NONE of them work like this! This is genuinely a great purchase, the design of 6 pickups getting each action of each string is the only kind I’ve seen like that. I’ve tried and researched them all, THIS IS THE ONE.

So close to perfect

This is an awesome tool for electronic music. I absolutely love it. It struggles with chords and when you play too fast. But these can be overcome. I would not let that deter you. As a guitar player I feel like this will completely expand my capabilities.

Is the new Studio MIDI Guitar available left-handed?

Yep! Make sure to use the "Handedness" dropdown menu to select the Left-Handed model when you check out!

Is it working on pitch recognition or contact sensors?

We are using a special MIDI pickup for pitch recognition paired with our own unique onboard algorithmic processing to ensure this job is done as quickly and accurately as possible—all while retaining genuine guitar playability.

How long does pitch conversion take? Can you share latency numbers?

The time it takes the pitch conversion to process the information into MIDI data over USB or TRS averages to 10ms. The typical range is from 6ms-15ms. The final amount of latency will vary depending on the hardware specifications and task management of the paired device. Other measures can be taken to adjust latency by using the buffer rate settings of your DAW.

Are there onboard sounds?

No, there are no onboard sounds or effects built-in to the guitar. Just like a lot of MIDI keyboards, you'll have to connect your Jamstik to a device (smartphone, tablet, laptop/desktop computer) running either our software or third-party software to generate the sound. There is also a standard 1/4" guitar output, so you can utilizes amps, pedals, and interfaces as usual.

Can it be used for tabbing with software like Guitar Pro?

The Studio MIDI Guitar is compatible with any apps and DAWs that accept MIDI-input. It works great for scoring in Guitar Pro by entering notes step by step, however, you will need to add things like hammer-on, slides, bends & other articulations manually after the note information has been entered since the software does not currently support real-time MIDI implementation.

Will it be able to transpose MIDI to different octaves or tunings?

In general, whatever physical tuning the guitar is at will dictate the MIDI pitch, so you can set any tuning you like. However, at very low tunings there may be some performance degradation. With 24 frets available, there shouldn't be a great need to octave up or down, but you can always play in standard tuning and transpose the MIDI data in your DAW.

Will the software require a DAW?

While the Studio MIDI guitar will work right out of the box with all MIDI-capable DAWs and plugins, the guitar does not require a DAW. The compatible Jamstik VST/AU Plugin can run as a standalone app on Mac and Windows and includes a curated library of specifically designed sounds for the Studio guitar.

Does it utilize MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression?

Yep, it's sending pitch bend/CC messages on multiple channels.

Do you have to use special strings?

Any metal strings will work just fine—The MIDI pickup is magnetic, so the guitar requires you to use metal strings rather than nylon. We'd recommend following standard .010–.046 gauges, but slightly below or above this range should be fine, though may require some sensitivity adjustments.

Can I use a Bluetooth speaker or wireless headphones?

No, you'll want to use a wired connection (aux cord) instead of a Bluetooth speaker or wireless headphones to avoid unwanted latency.

Are there any Duties, Taxes, or VAT included in the pricing?

No, every country, state, province, and city has different rules—making it impossible to calculate and pay accurately. All Duties, VAT, or any taxes are the responsibility of the customer.
